Hello again,
Well this was just a mistake from my part. I'm on an AMD Duron
processor, and I was using PentiumIII in the .config file :)
But still something is wrong. Now the kernel starts loading, but then
the system reboots!
Has this anything to do with the processor type? Has anyone tested this
on something other than an Intel chip?

I added some checkpoints. And it seems that the hang happens at:
...
if (boot_cpu_data.wp_works_ok < 0)
test_wp_bit();
...
in arch/i386/mm/init.c

It works and can (and must) be mounted as ext2.

Grub works, I use it regularily.
It might be something else than bootloader and filesystem.

Did you get the same with bochs?
Did you get some dump of some sort?
You have tried to insert some more detailed debug/checkpoints?
