I added some checkpoints. And it seems that the hang happens at:

in arch/i386/mm/init.c

It works and can (and must) be mounted as ext2.

Grub works, I use it regularily.
It might be something else than bootloader and filesystem.

Did you get the same with bochs?
Did you get some dump of some sort?
You have tried to insert some more detailed debug/checkpoints?
