Joel,

    Normally, the executables lie in SYS$SYSTEM, but this can be
overridden
in the CLD file.

    There is a second class of "commands" that can be built up via
symbols:

$ DIR:=="$direct/date/size"

    for example, so I can have decent looking directory listings.
