UNIX got started as a bad lab experiment. It incubated in the lab for 10
years until it finally got out into the general population.
The sad thing is Digital actually competed against themselves by creating a
variant strain of UNIXcalled untrix - yuk!!!
UNIX has many MS-DOS features like lack of reentrant code and major lack of
thread-safe code.
UNIX has no way of calling user written code from kernel mode - unless you
put the code in a device driver, modules in Linux, and
do the IOCTL calls to access the code.
most UNIX kernels are not interruptable. The newest initative in the Linux
world is to solve this issue. Of course you need
reentrant and thread-safe code to do this.
The UNIX moto is to provide 40% of the (easy) functionality in the OS and
leave 60% of the functionality (hard) to the developer.
the UNIX design/architecture is based on a long list of system calls. The
UNIX programmer doesn't care about
what happens behind the scenes in the OS since they have to program around
it all the time. Cygwin on Windows
is a good example of how to port unix to another OS platform. UNIX is a
libray of function calls. Some people call the
library of function calls POSIX. POSIX is a great example of creating a sham
of a "standard" that only UNIX
systems could meet the requirement while more capable mainframe and VMS
systems provided more value and were not allowed
to bid.

Linux might someday be better than UNIX. Until then it's fun watching UNIX
lose market share to Linux.

The VMS source code contains the implementations of some high-octane
intellectual capital. The hash algorithms are very cool.
What's under the covers of VMS is amazing. The internals books cover some of
it. Reading the source code enlightens the reader.
I would not steal VMS source code. I would try to understand how it works
better and develop alternative implementations.
Anyone can look at the code if they want to pay for the chance and most
likely sign a non-disclosure.
