I've done a lot of that. Not really a problem; all of RMS uses these
calls, and many other programs besides. Chapter 1 in the i/o manual describes
the calls fully. Note that much of the system locking occurs in RMS, so
these calls are not susceptible to locks in the same way. Therefore you can
use them to access files that are locked.
