Do you have one of those VMS Internals and Data Structures books?

Drivers sound good.
You might take a look at transforming some drivers.
I tried to do that with the floppy-driver, but did not succeed or have the
time. (Is it me, or is that floppychip ugly stuff?)

It might not matter that much if you have not the the Internals book,
it seems http://www.openvms.compaq.com/doc/ has a lot about devices and i/o.
(Search for device and i/o and you get like:
OpenVMS I/O User's Reference Manual
OpenVMS Alpha Device Support: Developer's Guide
OpenVMS Alpha Device Support: Reference)
